Macro Gallery: Field Encounters Up Close
Introduction
Macro photography often happens when you least expect it β along a trail edge, near a lodge, or during walks. These images were captured in real field situations using a simple, cellphone-based approach.
For the techniques behind these shots, see my guide to Macro Wildlife Photography in the Field. https://www.traveladventurescurated.com/macro-photography-in-the-field-what-actually-works/
About the Field Assessment
Each image includes a brief field assessment based on my real-world shooting experience in challenging outdoor conditions.
Ratings reflect overall image strength in areas such as:
- eye sharpness
- subject isolation
- lighting control
- background cleanliness
- and the natural moment captured
Encounters in the field are often brief and unpredictable, so a 4-star image represents a strong real-world result. Five-star images are uncommon and reflect exceptional field captures.
The goal of this assessment is not technical perfection, but honest evaluation of what worked in the moment.

From the Field
Macro photography is less about perfect conditions and more about awareness and steady technique. Most of these encounters lasted only seconds in real rainforest conditions.
Additional field observations will be added as new trips unfold.
